First Alliance Properties was founded in 2001 by Mark Barnwell and Mike Tomkinson. Both were previously directors of CB Richard Ellis, where Mark was responsible for all UK investment and fund management services and Mike ran the UK business space investment and development funding team.
Since foundation First Alliance Properties has been focused on two main areas; growing a proprietary portfolio, and pursuing joint venture opportunities with third party equity. The now wholly owned proprietary portfolio has been accumulated by actively buying, managing and selling a number of value-add commercial property projects initially in highly leveraged structures. Following the 2007 downturn, emphasis was placed on sourcing interesting properties suitable for acquisition in joint ventures and a number have been structured with partners such as Rockspring and JP Morgan Asset Management.
In April 2010 First Alliance Properties successfully tendered for the contract to asset manage the Amber and Sapphire (Part) industrial portfolios on behalf of West Register (a subsidiary of The Royal Bank of Scotland). Following a successful asset management programme, both portfolios were exited at prices considerably ahead of business plan expectation. In 2011 First Alliance Properties took on another contract from West Register, to asset manage The Place Retail Park in Milton Keynes. This was also subsequently sold at a price considerably ahead of business plan expectation.
In 2010 the team grew to include Ben Cassey as an Associate from the Goodman European Logistics Fund, with Robert Yeo joining as a Director in 2011 from Workman LLP where he was a lead partner for 20 years, and Peter Keppie as Asset Manager who joined in 2012 from Downing Property Services. The team’s property professionals are supported by Dom Ahern (Property Accounting), Dee Singer (Finance Manager) and Tina Williams, who provides secretarial and administrative services.
